Ramsey County attorney candidates tout their lists of bipartisan supporters

John Choi & Walter Mondale

Former Vice President Walter Mondale endorsed Choi as the next Ramsey County Attorney. Other Choi supporters include both GOP and DFL leaders, showcasing the bipartisan nature of his candidacy. GOP leaders include former U.S. attorney for Minnesota Thomas Heffelfinger and former chairman of the Republican Party of Minnesota Chris Georgacas.

Choi won the DFL party endorsement in April.

John Choi receives bipartisan support in Ramsey County Attorney race. Showing up at an event in Arden Hills were former U.S. Attorneys David Lillehaug (a DFLer) and Tom Heffelfinger (a Republican).

Also there to endorse Choi were former state Republican Party Chair Chris Georgacas, former state DFL Chair Rick Stafford, Anoka County Attorney Bob Johnson, former Arden Hills Mayor Bev Aplikowski and current Arden Hills Mayor Stan Harpstead.

John Choi has come out at the top of the fundraising heap so far in the race for Ramsey County attorney.  Choi raised $76,193 in 2009, according to a finance report filed Monday.

Choi wins the Democrat-Farmer-Labor endorsement for Ramsey County Attorney on the first ballot. After winning the endorsement, Choi told the crowd he was "really humbled."

DFL Veterans Caucus endorses John Choi

John Choi gets DFL Veterans Caucus support in Ramsey County Attorney's race.

"All suspected mental health issues, including PTSD, should be brought to the attention of the courts and not solely left up to the defense,” said Choi. “Mental illness diagnoses should not absolve an individual of guilt, but mitigating factors should potentially be taken into consideration to ensure those with mental illness get the treatment they need."

John Choi Participates In January DFL Forum

John Choi - Candidate for Ramsey County AttorneyThree of the four candidates for Ramsey County attorney responded to questions from a St. Paul audience Tuesday night about why they should be elected the county's top prosecutor in November.

The forum, held at the United Auto Workers Union Hall in Highland Park and sponsored by the Senate District 64 DFL and Congressional District 4 DFL, was open to those seeking the party's endorsement. The seat itself is nonpartisan.

Gov. Wendell Anderson & AFSCME Council 5 Endorse John Choi

AFSCME Council 5 Endorses John Choi for Ramsey County AttorneySt. Paul City Attorney John Choi added to his endorsement list in his campaign for Ramsey County attorney this weekend with word that AFSCME Council 5 is on board.

That's the union that includes assistant Ramsey County attorneys; another challenger in the race, Dave Pinto, is an assistant Ramsey County attorney.

A Carrot-And-Stick Approach To Helping Suspended Drivers

A pilot program set to begin July 1 in St. Paul, West St. Paul, South St. Paul, Inver Grove Heights and Duluth offers a carrot-and-stick approach to help those drivers get legal. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety limited the number of cities to participate initially, but Minneapolis and other cities may be allowed to join later.

The cities will work with Financial Crimes Services, a private company based in Red Wing, and the state Department of Public Safety (DPS). Participants, who will be chosen by prosecutors, will receive a "diversion license," similar in all respects to a regular driver's license except to those behind the scenes. A bill approved by the Legislature this spring allows the DPS to issue such a license. In the past, a driver had to pay all outstanding fines and fees up front before they could get their license back.
